A creative whose practice focuses on the ways visual design shapes our everyday experiences. She explores how type and image influences our perception, communication, and interaction in both physical and digital environments.
Component is a typeface that explores the dynamic possibilities of modularity through code. With components that can be switched, a simple pixel typeface becomes interesting and unexpected.
The goal of the project was not the to get to a final state but explore the moments in between. Beginning at its “base” state, it is a variable typeface with three axes: one for switching the components(curve, double curve, & straight), one for slanting glyphs, and one for randomizing the position of the components. Code has become integral part of type design. This is a core reason why I wanted to develop my skills and try coding during my final semester at the School of Visual Arts. During this independent study, I had the opportunity to study under one of the best type designers and coder, Ryan Bugden. The final result was Component, which challenged my design process and thinking.

The typeface is created out of five components. This includes a base square with three transitional components: right triangles with a curve, double curve, and straight edge. An additional component made from a square and a half circle is used when two transitional components are next to one another.
A script creates a separate UFO for each permutation of the key states along the three axes. It produces a total of 150 (!!) separate UFOs. Being an extremely labor-intensive process if done manually, the designspace is written programmatically. Ultimately, the final typeface used coding not only as a tool for exploration but for efficiency.
Legibility is unnecessary while dynamism is essential. Type isn’t merely a tool for communication but for expression and experimentation.
